Tips for Weaning a Foal

Foal JumpingThe following management tips can facilitate the production of healthy, strong weanlings:

  • Provide creep feed early to a foal to supplement a mare’s milk.

  • Feed a diet that is formulated specifically for a foal and weanling.

  • Use a gradual weaning system to decrease stress at weaning time.

  • Provide free exercise for a growing horse to promote skeletal development.

  • Work with your veterinarian on a vaccination and deworming program for your foal.

  • Work with your farrier on a trimming schedule for your foal.
