Spring Check List
- Plan your 2008 vaccination schedule for your horse now to ensure they are protected against mosquito born diseases this summer. Equine practitioners’ schedules fill up fast in the spring and early summer so get on their schedules early to ensure your horse is prepared for the show and trail riding season.
- Prevent over-consumption of early spring grasses which can cause founder in some horses and ponies. While all horses are susceptible to grass founder, breeds like Morgans, Shetland ponies, and donkeys are at a high risk. In addition, horses with a fat body condition score are more prone to metabolic disorders like founder and colic.
- Begin a slow and progressive conditioning program for your horse to get ready for the show or trail riding season.
- Have your horse's teeth examined by your veterinarian annually and especially before you start your riding program after a long winter break.
- Make sure your horse's feet are in good shape to begin your spring riding and training program.
- If your horse lost weight over the winter, try increasing the amount of quality forage and supplement with a balanced grain product that is designed for your horse's age and work load.
